"Most of you surely won't have an album of Kazakh band in your collections, and if so, then it's most probably one of HOLY DRAGONS, the probably longest running Metal act from the country in central Asia, whose discography is going into it's seventh round with "Wolves Of Odin". As always, the Kazakhs with Russian origin present traditional Heavy Metal und proudly announce that they can do so without using keyboards and other things widely associated with the abounding melodic Power and Speed Metal of these days. On the other hand they're not really far away from that style either, as they really do use catchy and mostly very fast melodic riffs and lead-guitars. However, they avoid being drawn into the "Happy Metal"-genre that they seem to despise, especially thanks to the raw voice of lead-singer Holger Komaroff, which perfectly suits the music but luckily does not fit the clichees of epic and melodic Fantasy Metal. That effect is even more stressed by the fact that all lyrics are in Russian, which is a rather harsh sounding language and thus perfectly suitable to this kind of Metal. It gives the band something special, making them stand out of the grey mass of competitors. I really hope they'll stick to that and won't completely bend their knees to the somehow "trendy" English language. The bilingual lyrics in the booklet are certainly enough international approach for me.

The album convinces from the beginning, kicking off with the dramatically introduced, fast opener 'Dogs Of War'. Even though the band is clearly influenced by Western European Metal, it's not only the language that makes the difference between HOLY DRAGONS and their idols and influences. It's also the decently used melody lines recalling Russian folklore that you can hear at many places. However they don't make the band sound like a Folk Metal act at all. Just listen to 'Valhalla' with his high speed assaults, and you'll know what I mean. The guys luckily don't limit themselves to high speed action though. They're capable to arrange their tunes with complex structures and many skillfully set changes of tempo, which is beautifully illustrated by the somehow HELLOWEENish 'The Last Day Of Life'. The short song 'The Storm' has a programmatic title: Straight, direct and fast as lightning to the core - decorated with some beautiful soloing and basslines. Here we have another benefit of the album: The mix allows the bass to shine brightly through the razorsharp and mostly very quick guitars.

The following 'The Light Of Fires' nicely combines sombre epic with a driving groove and a more rapid bridge, before 'The Lord Of The Seas' starts off really quick again, although including some paced down moments. The very strong 'Illusory Sabbath' starts off balladesque, developing into a melancholic anthem with a hymnic chorus, graced by a fast middle part and the somehow DIO-like dramatic aspect gaining control again via the end. Once more we get some pure Melodic Speed Metal with 'Ragnarok', which brings early BLIND GUARDIAN to my mind. We then get two more, quite aggressive highlights in the shape of the titletrack and 'The Last Fight', which show quite a lot of variety in terms of tempo and mood, perfectly rounding up a beautiful album.

After all, I'd honestly say that "Wolves Of Odin" is a very convincing album, that doubtlessly should be to the taste of any fan of mostly uncheesy, yet still very melodic Speed or Power Metal, as long as he does rate a certain "exotic" touch as something positive and also is open for one or another band from the Russian cultural sphere, maybe having some ARIA standing next to the essential classics of his collection."

Грановский хороший, вот недавно купила диск ранее не известной мне группы Holy Dragons (Волки Одина, Power&Speed), не когда ренее не слышала такой четкой игры, в каждой песне хорошо слышна бас гитара. В песне Рагнарёк, соло басилки, не когда не слышала такой быстрой игры на басу (вообще мало чего такого слышала) Да и к сожалению мало у каких групп, где вообще прослушивается бас. Обожаю этот муз.инструмент!

I checked the first 2 songs (Последний бой (1), Свет костров (2)) from those 3
Cool, sounds like a good band, the first song is pretty good I like it better than the 2nd.
I just think the production esp. the guitars sound could be improved.

1- супер-пхонат 80" металла и древнего хард-рока!; 2- слушает хэви/пауэр (ну может ещё что-то) как старый, так и свежий!; 3- слушает преимущественно пауэр! (большинство групп все знают, у всех на слуху). Других отзывов там нет.

Und wieder ein weißer Fleck auf der metallischen Landkarte weniger. „Der einzige Ort an dem Drachen existieren können ist weit weg von der Zivilisation. Und so tauchte diese Band in Kasachstan auf, wo die Bergkette des Tien-Shan China von der ehemaligen Sowjetunion trennt.“ Schönes Bandinfo. So fernab der Zivilisation klingt das nunmehr sechste Album der Kasachen allerdings nicht, wohl sind westeuropäische Einflüsse allerdings schwer auszumachen. Von den im Info angegebenen Einflüssen „Walls Of Jericho“ oder „Painkiller“ höre ich extrem wenig. Ein wenig „Keeper Of The Seven Keys“ meets Murray/Smith würde es eher treffen. Die andere -bessere- Beschreibung der Musik wäre: 100% Arija.
Die russischen Vocals und der so typische 80er Gitarrenklang führen uns zurück in die Zeit der sowjetischen Stahlschmieden. Genau jene Zeit als ich das erste Mal Kontakt mit russischem Metal hatte und völlig blauäugig „Playing With Fire“ von Arija für weniger als 1 DM gekauft habe. Und die heiligen Drachen treffen in meinen Ohren nicht nur genau den Geist jener Zeit (auch bedingt durch die Produktion), sondern klingen auch wie das Moskauer Flagschiff, in dessen Fahrwasser sie sich mit feinen, griffigen Melodien auch erstaunlich gut halten.
Holger Komaroff gefällt mir mit seiner rauen Stimme ebenfalls recht gut, auch wenn er an der einen oder anderen Stelle die Nerven durch mangelnde Abwechslung und fehlendes Können in den hohen sowie ruhigen Tonlagen etwas strapaziert.
Trotz allem eine wirklich runde Sache für Leute, die sich immer noch nach den 80er befinden und eben für alle Anhänger russischen Metals.

SANGARA 'CNMDOPNE 3NA' (METALISM RECORDS)

Strong 80s Melodic Metal with a very European kinda Hardrock/Metal approach
is what we get to hear on the CD of the Russian band SANGARA. It's always
hard comparing the Russian bands to other Metalbands from USA/Europe, due to
the language barrier. Also SANGARA sings in their own Russian language,
which is hard to understand for non-Russian speakers. What is clear is the
fact that the CD of SANGARA is a very good record, which should please any
Melodic Metal fan. Most of the songs are uptempo and maybe comparisons to
ROB ROCK and MEDUZA are possible here, although the vocalwork is much rawer
and aggressive, but the feeling of the songs are basically typical Melodic

RETRIEM 'UDK K CYDBBE' (METALISM RECORDS)

RETRIEM is one of the better Russian bands at the moment. Their latest CD is
a very good record, which is basically filled with high class
(Neo-Classical) Melodic Heavy Rock/Metal. Vocally it sounds good, the
sound/production is also quite perfect and most of the 10 included songs are
quite sensational. If you don't mind the Russian lyrics, then you have here
a very good band that have a release out which is even better than the new
STRATOVARIUS. Besides STRATOVARIUS, you can also compare RETRIEM to SONATA
ARCTICA, ANGRA and KAMELOT (a lot), with as big difference the Russian
lyrics of course. The band combines melody with neo-classical metal and
hardrock riffs, which (admitted) also sounds like MALMSTEEN here and there,
but due to the Russian lyrics it gives RETRIEM a sort of own style. It doesn't
make much sense to mention the songtitles here, but take it from me that
this CD plays very well from start to finish. More info at:

HOLY DRAGONS 'BONKU OGUHA' (METALISM RECORDS)

One of the more well-known bands in the Russian regions is the Kazachstan
settled HOLY DRAGONS. I have reviewed their earlier releases and now it is
time for their latest release. Of course lyrics are in Russian (?), but if
you listen to their sound that should not be a problem, because instrumental
this band is far above the rest. Just listen to the solo's and riffs,
because it is of a very high level, high class Neo-Classical Melodic Metal
like a Kazachstan version of MALMSTEEN. Vocally it is a bit weaker, because
lead singer Holger Komaroff is a very raw singer, which makes the music of
HOLY DRAGONS less sensational and that's a pity, because instrumental this

AEBRTBIHBAD 'AEBRTBIHAD' (METALISM RECORDS)

Another new Russian band with a sensational release. Just like RETRIEM also
this band is playing a very melodic metalstyle, which combines Neo-Classical
Metal with strong AORlike melodies. Comparisons to KAMELOT are once again
very clear. Not much info on the band, but the 12 songs on their CD surely
show a very impressive band. Vocally they are also very good (clean and
melodic), while the sound/production is of a high level, so are the songs
and therefore we have another winner from Russia here. Just like any other
band from Russia, also this band is singing in their own language and it is
even hard to write down their Russian bandname. Nevertheless, music has not
borders and therefore this CD is a highly recommended Melodic
(Neo-Classical) Metal piece to any fan of KAMELOT, PAGAN'S MIND,

В общем все группы Метализма - это Неоклассический Мелодик Метал с АОРом, практически Мальмстин и Стратовариус с Камелотом. Единственное, но принципиальное отличие в том, что они исполнены на бусурманском языке. За это снимается 1.5 балла. Чем агрессивнее вокал - тем хуже (что в общем-то правильно в отношении АОРа). За это снимается 0.4-0.5 баллов. С диагнозом все ясно.

Хотя у них же травы дофига!!! Чего за группа последняя была то???
У нас была версия, что это Арбитратор, хотя они поют не по русски, видимо тут все завист от степени укурки. Агрессивный вокал заставляет нашего клиента просыпаться и мешает ему сконцентрироваться на процессе написания ревью, поэтому баллы и снимаются!!!!!

A band that sings in Russian (or maybe in Kazak I’m sorry I’m not sure of it), that’s not so common right? Well it’s maybe the second time in my life that I listen to Metal with lyrics in a Slavic language but after some minutes it’s actually not bad at all, especially if the band is not a bad one evidently. “Wolves Of Odin” is the 9th albums of the really productive Holy Dragons a combo from Kazakhstan specialized in Fantasy, Knights, Dragons and above all Heavy Metal.

Yeah yeah, one can’t say that Holy Dragons doesn’t avoid the pit of the Heavy Metal cliches. The lyrics talk about Fantasy, Dragons, Vikings legends etc, that’s so common it’s hard to find something really original on this album. Same thing for the music they use the basic structure of Heavy/Power Metal with fast tempos, guitars solos and very high vocals. But however it’s not so bad, I mean that ok this is one of the winners of the most unoriginal releases of the year 2005 but at least, it’s well done.

Let’s talk about the good points then. First the musicians are good no doubt on this point, Holger Komarov is a good singer with a nice really high voice and yeah the vocals in Russian are surprising and plus it sounds good with Heavy Metal. Also Jorg Thunderson the guitarist is an amazing musician who knows how to play the guitar. His solos are really impressive and a lot of time it sounds like a “neo-classical” Music. The drummer is also good and all the songs of the album are a synonym of rhythm. This is a classic Heavy/Power Metal yes but it’s more than correct musically talking.
Oki oki, it’s not the perfection but Holy Dragons is a good band of Heavy Metal and we cannot blame the musicians of the band. Actually as you can understand the only problem of this album is its lack of originality, but if you don’t mind and want a good album of Heavy Metal, you can count on “Wolves Of Odin”, that is at least more than efficient.

Current band of the moment for me are HOLY DRAGONS....from Kazakhstan! Current song I'm listening to is 'Zheleznyi Orel' ('Steel Eagle') which has some fantastic guitaring in it and funky bass. Lyrics and vocals are in Russian which give the band an interesting twist. Now, I know what you are thinking - WTF is that maniac listening to?!?! But let me assure you, this band deserves my attention. Although essentially a power metal band (e.g Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce, Stratovarious etc) their sound is very eighties and part could be linked with the mighty Irom Maiden.

Being from Kazakhstan, no-one has EVER heard of them but I recommend you at least to give them a listen and see what they are all about. By no means the greatest band of all time, I still think they deserve some regonition for their efforts and hey, who knows - maybe it will open new doors in music for you guys!
