Что нужно человеку для счастья? Мир и покой в душе, верные друзья, любимая, детский смех… Все остальное – иллюзия и тщета. И если вы счастливы – то слава Богу, если же нет – никогда не поздно найти к нему верный путь, оставив за спиной все горести, боль и беды. Они, конечно, никогда не исчезнут из человеческой жизни – в конце концов, почувствовать боль абсолютно необходимо, чтобы познать ее противоположность, но жить в печали – отнюдь не удел человека… В-общем, киевская группа SUNRISE готова помочь тем, кто не видит в жизни просвета, с помощью своей светлой, жизнерадостной, бурлящей энергией молодости музыки… C помощью самого настоящего happy-metal. Такое впечатление, что когда звучит музыка их дебютного альбома – мир становится светлее и радостнее, и даже религиозные мотивы, которые являются важной смысловой составляющей песен, не раздражают и не вызывают отторжения, как то часто бывает у т.н. «христианских» групп. Киевляне никого ничему не учат, они просто делятся своей радостью, своим энтузиазмом, своими горестями (без них ведь тоже не обойтись) и умением их преодолевать. Можно, конечно, искать аналогии их музыки с HALLOWEEN, EDGUY и т.п, кривя при этом губы от того, что ребята, что называется «не соответствуют», но зачем? Гораздо важнее те эмоции, та открытость, с которой музыканты их передают, та искренность, с которой звучит их музыка – и недостатки просто не хочется замечать… Ординарный фальцет вокалиста, не очень плотный звук, легко угадываемые гитарные соло, сухость мелодий, в балладе “Hear Me” достигающая абсурда (такое впечатление, что подобную песню вы слышите уже в тысячный раз) – все это из “LIBERTY” не выкинешь. Как никуда не деться и оттого, что на альбоме нет ничего, что хоть отдаленно претендовало бы на хит. Даже «Иллюзия Жизни», которую на этот пост назначили, продублировав на украинском языке, с трудом вспоминается по окончании альбома. Зато в душе остается какое-то светлое чувство, ощущение покоя и умиротворения. Этот альбом нужно слушать целиком или не слушать вообще. Выбранная наугад песня может представить его в крайне невыгодном свете, тогда как полная картина полностью способна поменять оценку. И все же, при том, что дебют SUNRISE оставляет весьма приятное впечатление, ребятам ни в коем случае не стоит обольщаться. Эмоции – это такая вещь… Сегодня получилось донести их до слушателя, не расплескав, в следующий раз может и не получиться. Неплохо бы их подтвердить и более уверенной и оригинальной (прежде всего) музыкой.

Ich bespreche das hier nur, weil mich ein sehr netter Mensch aus Russland darum gebeten hat. Für Melodic Metal fühle ich mich nämlich nicht zuständig, und der sixpack aus Kiew rackert zu seinem und meinem Unglück in einem Genre, dem ich zuletzt vor 20 Jahren etwas abgewinnen konnte:
Gestelztes Kopfstimmen-Pathos; straight ahead Doublebase-Geboller, das kaum Druck entwickelt; mal mehr, mal weniger schnelle, zuckrige Leads und lasche Riffs; Keyboards, die entweder nur die ohnehin harmlosen Konturen weichzeichnen oder zu allem Überfluss im Vordergrund ihre Locken drehen. Dargereicht in völlig berechenbaren Strukturen. Eben genau der Kram, der einem als Metaller von Kollegen und Kommilitonen schräge Blicke einträgt. – Der geneigte Happy Metal – Fan beschreibt das natürlich etwas anders…
Und nun will ich mich redlich mühen, SUNRISE gerecht(er) zu werden… Zunächst einmal erfüllen die Ukrainer sämtliche Clichés / Erwartungen mit denen das Genre aufwartet. Die Frage ist da nur, auf welchem Niveau. Egal wie ahnungslos ich auf diesem Sektor bin, einen Vergleich mit den Marktführern vermag ich anzustellen. Und da schneiden SUNRISE nicht wirklich schlechter ab als das, was ich sonst so kenne. Die Gitarristen sind handwerklich geschickt und überraschen gelegentlich mal mit einer richtigen Idee… Keys und Rhythmiker sind so wie sie wohl in dieser Sparte sein sollen. Alleinsongschreiber und Sänger Konstantin Naumenko aber übertrifft stimmlich seine Kollegen spielend. Seine Bänder sind entschieden stabiler als die von Timo Kotipelto oder Joacim Cans.
In puncto Songwriting ist noch gut Luft nach oben … mal ein symphonischer Part à la STRATOVARIUS hier oder auch ein hymnischer HAMMERFALL-Chor da, hätten sicher nicht geschadet, dem Wechselspiel aus schnellen und balladesken Klängen einige Farbtupfer zu verpassen. Auch gerät man manchmal in gefährlich seichtes Gewässer. Selbst für Genreverhältnisse. Kurz gesagt, in einigen Punkten sind sie unterhalb der Szenegrößen zu verorten, in anderen darüber. Die Produktion ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Das Coverartwork zwar unerträglich kitschig, aber graphisch erste Sahne.
Die größte Schwäche von SUNRISE im Vergleich zu wem auch immer, ist 100pro ihre Nationalität. Bands aus den Ländern dessen, was vor der Perestrojka der Ostblock war, werden von der hiesigen Presse ja leider weitgehend ignoriert, weil sie selten Artikel über Anzeigen erkaufen können und außerdem sind die Vertriebswege für ihre enthusiastischen 1-Mann Plattenfirmen wie Metalism schwierig. Dabei wartet im Osten so Manches auf die verdiente Wahrnehmung. Für den Melodic Metal Bereich darf man SUNRISE sicher dazuzählen.
Anstatt also das nächste banale und gehypte Album von irgendwelchen Skandinaviern zu kaufen, sollte man sein hart erkämpftes Geld doch lieber Leuten geben, die zwar gleichermaßen banal sind, aber ebenso hart arbeiten müssen wie man selbst. Ende Rotfunk.
Subjektiv könnte ich heute auch dem wohl besten Album dieser Sparte, HELLOWEENs „Keeper“, allenfalls fünf Punkte geben. Für „Liberty“ gäbe es im direkten Vergleich eine 3,5. Setzt man, als imaginärer Freund dieser Sparte, für den Meilenstein der Hamburger aber die 10 an, dann gibt’s für SUNRISE eine hoffentlich (!) realistische 7.

SUNRISE Liberty Metalism
На огромном поле пауэр-метала места хватит на всех. В список желающих по-своему распахать эту ниву включаются все новые и новые коллективы со всех концов света – от Канады до Японии. Мода эта докатилась и до стран СНГ, так что появление на мировом небосклоне мелодик-метала команды украинского происхождения – вещь в какой-то мере закономерная.
Закономерно и все то, что насочиняли хлопцы на диске Liberty. Светлый, прозрачный, кристальный и очень сладкий пауэр… а также угадываемый, простоватый и немного, как мне показалось, наивный. Нечто подобное делали Helloween в годы классических Keeper Of The Seven Keys. Спору нет, своего слушателя Sunrise обязательно отыщет – как я уже говорил, места на широченном поле хватит для всех. Другое дело, сколько этих слушателей соберется? Надолго ли их хватит предугадывать мелодии да просчитывать в уме полет соляков?
Но хватит (заслуженной) критики. Хотя бы потому, что диск записан вполне прилично, и подобных ему издается по миру сотнями за год. Киевляне подошли к работе аккуратно, с любовью, смастерив то, на что способны в данный период развития. Первая высота взята, надо ставить новые задачи.

Sunrise - Liberty
I didn't know that Sonata Arctica guys have some cousins in Ukraine. You didn't know that too? Well their name is Konstantin, Vitaliy, Vladimir etc and they play in a band called Sunrise! Sure they're not their real official cousins but when I listen to their music I have the feeling that we have a big link between these two bands… Is it a matter of similarities? Of course it is and the people who like the Finish combo will like "Liberty"… or simply say that it's a copycat…
I'm trying to find some big differences between Sonata Arctica and Sunrise but except the fact that one name talk about "ice" and the other about "sun" I don't find anything different. Like the Finish combo, Sunrise plays some kind of really melodic Power Metal. This is "happy" as hell ultra conventional and not really original but on a side, it works. Sure this kind of Power Metal is not the most innovative thing that we've heard lately but in the case of Sunrise I have to admit that our Ukrainians musicians have found the way to write good songs which will convince, in my opinion, the ones who like Finnish Power Metal. The album is composed of fast super commercial songs, like ballads and all the melodies will be easily remembered. Definitely if you don't like such kind of music, just go away because "Liberty" will not give you anything new but if you're looking for some easy of access Power Metal, it should be ok for you.
Despite its real lack of originality and despite the fact that "Liberty" is a bit too similar to the releases of Sonata Arctica, I cannot say that Sunrise is a bad band. The musicians are not so bad except their singer Konstantin Naumenko who is a bit out of tune some time, but all in all it's ok. The artwork is cliché as hell but nicely represent the genre and since that the production is not bad at all, it's hard to find bad things in this release. As I said already the music of "Liberty" is just too similar to the one of some other bands but in the genre it's well done!
If you're not afraid by copycat albums and like Finnish Power Metal, have a look on "Liberty". Really Sunrise don't have to suffer of any comparisons with the famous bands of the category but this is just a bit sad that the band didn't find the way to write something a bit more personal. Though with time maybe that the combo will find its own personality; and this day Sunrise will become an important name in the Power Metal category.

There has always been a fine line to walk with Power Metal. On one side of this line lies the ridiculousness of the genre and on the other side lies the over seriousness of the genre. And it’s those bands in the genre that find a balance between the cheesiness and the seriousness that make this genre a pure joy to listen too. But it is a fine line to walk and many bands stray one way or the other.
SUNRISE leans a little too far on the cheese factor for myself. Their debut album, “Liberty”, does show many strong points for the band. Given that it is only a debut for the band I am still impressed with some of the performances and songwriting abilities. SUNRISE plays a very melodic form of Power Metal that fans of HAMMERFALL and the like are going to find interesting.
Of course, starting off your debut album with 80s style keyboards is just asking for an expectation of tongue-in-cheek music, so when the band does move towards a speedier sound on some of the tracks, check out “Lie And Truth”, it was a welcome change of pace. The impressive guitar melodies and leads on the album are one of the high points. Although some feel as though they just appear from nowhere, it’s mostly a pleasure to hear their guitar work on the album. Luckily, the drums are a great up tempo companion to the melodies and really keep this album moving.
Now, the vocal melodies are definitely a hit or miss element to “Liberty”. Vocalist, Konstantin Naumenko (can you tell they are from the Ukraine?), has quite the lower register and his high register works at times but it feels as though his control of the upper register is a little too loose for the suspension of notes that is needed for the music. It’s impressive for the effort but a little more control would make a world of difference.
Although “Liberty” has its good and bad moments mostly the performances and writing is solid. Perhaps the album is a little too cliche at times and gets lost in the sea of Power Metal bands, but it’s a solid debut for a young band. Tightening up some of the nuts and bolts is needed for them to really start sounding awesome.

Die Ukraine: Unendliche Getreidefelder, die schon mal Begierde in diesem unseren Land geweckt haben. Glücklicherweise dürfen wir aber viel friedlicher und vor allem positiver an das Thema herangehen, denn in diesem Fall kommen Vertreter aus der hierzulande nicht gerade als Metal-Nation verschrienen Ukraine zu uns gehoppelt und bringen Power Metal mit.
Unglücklicherweise kann ich über die Band SUNRISE, um die es hier geht, so gar nichts sagen, außer dass sie zu fünft sind, seit 2003 zusammen spielen und aus Kyiv kommen - das dürfte ja wohl aller Voraussicht nach der originale Name von Kiew sein. Danach verlässt es mich aber, denn die einzige sinnvolle Seite, die ich gefunden habe, frönt massiv einer Sprache mit kyrillischen Buchstaben . ja, Russisch ist wohl das, was man einen "educated guess" nennt. Oder wie die Russen sagen würden: "Da". Glücklicherweise ist da noch die Myspace-Seite der Fünf, die wenigstens darüber Auskunft gibt, dass es sich bei "Liberty" um das Debüt von SUNRISE handelt.
Also lassen wir doch lieber die Musik sprechen: Power Metal habe ich gesagt, jetzt fügen wir noch ein "symphonisch" hinzu, und um ein "finnisch" kommen wir nicht drumherum, denn die lieben Kollegen klingen stark nach einer anderen Band, die auch Freund und Feind für SUNRISE gleich äußerst adäquat definieren dürfte: SONATA ARCTICA. Mal wird das Symphonische in den Vordergrund gestellt, oder auch mal das Tempo angezogen, dann wieder sorgt eine Ballade oder ein besonders harmonischer Teil für Melodic-Metal-Feeling. Aber unterm Strich ist dies eine jugendlichere Version der Finnen, was man durchaus als Kompliment auffassen sollte.
Das bedeutet aber auch, dass man nicht allzu viel Originalität erwarten darf. Wenn man damit leben kann, einfach gute Songs eben dieses Genres zu hören, ist man an der richtigen Adresse. Die einzigen beiden Schwachpunkte von "Liberty" sind die teilweise etwas lang geratenen Songs sowie die Tatsache, dass Sänger Konstantin Naumenko in einigen Songs deutlich seine Grenzen erkennen lässt, so im Opener 'Born To Find' und bei 'Inside Of The Rising Sun'. Für Gesang gilt halt nicht das Schneller-Höher-Weiter-Prinzip, aber man gewöhnt sich an den Herrn recht schnell, und obendrein gab es das alles schon häufig viel schlechter.
Da SUNRISE bereits an einem zweiten Album arbeiten, ist Power-Metal-Liebhabern angeraten, sich einmal auf der Myspace-Seite der Band umzusehen und in die Songs von "Liberty" reinzuhören. Das Scheibchen ist eine kleine Perle, die durchaus Spaß macht. Man kann dann gleich mal die Band anmailen und fragen, wie das Album zu bekommen ist. Und schon bald darf man sich dann über neues Futter freuen - wenn das mal keine gute Voraussetzung ist, weiß ich es auch nicht mehr. Da kann man dann auch mal über etwas Unoriginalität hinwegsehen.

I'm telling you folks, some of the best power metal is coming out of Russia and the neighboring Ukraine right now. While Sweden, Finland, Italy and Germany were providing the best power metal bands early in the decade, many of them are changing direction and style, and it's the Russian and Ukrainian bands that are now playing that popular power metal style that all of us were going nuts over earlier in the decade. One new band is Sunrise from Ukraine, and with their debut 'Liberty', this young band already has the talent and songwriting skills to make a name for themselves in the power metal world.
Unlike many of their coutrymen, Sunrise has chosen to use English lyrics, so this is not a Russian-language CD, and although I'm very fond of Russian-language bands (as you all know), vocalist Konstantin Naumento has such a wonderful and clear voice that I'd be happy with whatever language he sung in. I must admit that it's been really nice to understand what he's saying, but musically, you can still hear some similarities to Russian-language bands like Epidemia, Charizma, Arda, Callisto, Decuman Wave, Retriem and so on. However, because this is an English-language CD, the overall best band comparisons would be the popular and large group that contains Thunderstone, Sonata Arctica, Destination's Calling, Dreamtale, Nightscape, Stratovarius, Arida Vortex, Twilightning (early), Cardiant, Supreme Majesty, Celesty and Moonville.
So by now I've surely got your attention, but let me tell you that what makes this CD so great (besides Konstantin's vocals) is definitely the guitar work. Featuring 2 guitarists, Vitaliy Petrychenko and Vladimir Ovcharov, Sunrise offers up plenty of sweet lead guitar work and some of the best guitar solos I've heard in the last few years. These guys are young, but they're certainly competitive with other guitarists from any power metal band out there. Plus, although I've always liked keyboards with metal, there aren't too many keys, as Eduard Fefer keeps them in the background for the most part, leaving the guitarists to truly shine.
Another impressive side of Sunrise is that they've already proven they can provide a nice song variety, as 'Liberty' contains a few slow songs (track 5 "Hear me" and track 10 "Travel"), some mid-paced/bouncy songs (the opener "Born to find", the spectacular track 3 "Illusion of life" and the memorable track 9 "Can you feel the pain?"), and there are faster songs of course, and these would be track 2 "Gone with the time", track 4 "Lie and truth", track 6 "Stay with me" and track 8 "Inside of the rising sun". We even get an instrumental (track 7 "Look to eternity"), and it's fantastic. The bonus track "Illusion of life" is the Russian-language version (which I've translated) of track 3, and this proves that the band will succeed with either language.
So I've spit out lots of praise so far, but one thing that's really great is that those who haven't gotten into the Russian-language bands (yet!) can pick this up based on the numerous band comparisons (the popular and large group) and the fact that it's an English-language CD. You'll then soon find out just how excellent some of the musicians are from Russia/Ukraine and the bonus track will give you a taste of the Russian language, and hopefully you'll then take my advice and get into Russian-language power metal. As a major lover of power metal, I'm here to say that it's a real treat to listen to a few Russian-language CDs on a regular basis to bring in some variety.
